I’m fat. I’m too skinny. I’d be happy if I were taller, shorter, had curly hair, straight hair, a smaller nose, bigger muscles, longer legs. Do any of these statements sound familiar? Do you often put yourself down? If so, you’re not alone. As a teen, you’re going through a ton of changes in your body. And as your body changes, so does your image of yourself. Lots of people have trouble getting used to it, and this can affect their confidence.
Some people think they need to change how they look or act to feel good about themselves. But actually all you need to do is change the way you see your body and how you think about yourself.
The first thing to do is recognize that your body is your own, no matter what shape, size, or color it comes in. If you’re very worried about your weight or size, go to your doctor to check that things are OK. But it’s no one’s business but your own what your body is like--finally, you have to be happy with yourself.
Next, find which aspects (方面) of your appearance you can change and which you can’t. Everyone, even the most perfect-seeming celebrity (名人), has things about themselves that they can’t change and need to accept--like their height, for example, or their shoe size.
If there are things about yourself that you want to change and can, do this by making goals for yourself. For example, if you want to get fit, make a plan to exercise every day and eat nutritious foods.
When you hear negative comments coming from within yourself, tell yourself to stop. Try building your confidence by listing three things in your day that really gave you pleasure. It can be anything like the way the sun felt on your face, the sound of your favorite band, or the way someone laughed at your jokes.
56. From the first paragraph, we can infer that _____.
A. most teens like to have a special body image
B. many teens can’t accept their body changes easily
C. teens prefer to change their body image quickly
D. teens usually change their opinions on their body image
57. Which of the following does the author probably agree with?
A. Change the way other people look at you.
B. Go to your doctor for advice on how to change your body.
C. Learn from some celebrities on how to change your body.
D. Realize you can’t change everything about yourself.
58. The underlined phrase “put yourself down” in the first paragraph probably means _____.
A. make yourself fall down
B. write down your name somewhere
C. force yourself to do something
D. say negative things about yourself
59. The passage is mainly about _____.
A. how to adjust to the changes of your body
B. how to build confidence by changing your body
C. how to keep an attractive body image
D. how to find pleasure in your day
B
Climbing stairs is a well-established way to help keep fit. But many staircases don’t lend themselves to climbing. They are often located in hard-to-reach places and unattractively designed and lighted. Then is there a worthwhile health benefit from walking down stairs?
Now, researchers are urging building designers to rethink their work – even including using music – to encourage people to use stairs more.
Writing in The Southern Medical Journal, the researchers said that even a little increase in the use of stairs could play a role in helping to solve the nation’s weight problem. The lead author of the article is Dr. Ishak A. Mansi of Louisiana State University. His wife, Nardine Mansi, an architect (建筑师), is a co-author.
The authors pointed out several characteristics of stair design that discourage regular use. To begin with, they said, stairs are generally viewed as a way to leave a building in case of fire. Because of fire codes, the article said, they usually have heavy spring doors and no carpeting (铺设地毯). They are also not air-conditioned.
Instead, the authors said stairs should be made a central feature of new buildings and be designed to draw people to them. Even in existing buildings, they said, improvements can be made.
In one study, the article said, researchers looked at increasing stair use at a workplace by adding carpeting. They also painted the walls, put up artwork and played music in the stairwell. And they put up motivational (激励人的) signs encouraging people to take the stairs.
60. What does the author mean by saying “many staircases don’t lend themselves to climbing”?
A. Climbing stairs is tiring and often takes much time.
B. Present stairs are inconvenient for people to use.
C. People prefer taking lifts to taking staircases.
D. Some buildings have no staircases.
61. Building designers are advised to _____.
A. play background music on the first floor
B. design special staircases for climbers
C. try to attract people to climb stairs
D. build stairs at a quiet and unnoticed place
62. Why is there no carpeting on stairs in buildings?
A. It may be stolen.
B. It is very likely to get dirty.
C. It makes cleaning the stairs difficult.
D. It is easy to catch fire.
63. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Climbing stairs – the best way to exercise
B. Making stairs a place for exercise
C. Which is better – stairs or lifts
D. Solving the nation’s weight problem
C
Whether you depend on your bike for transportation or exercise, you’ll enjoy these fun facts on this two-wheeled vehicle.
● In 1817, Karl von Drais, from Germany, invented a horseless carriage that would help him get around faster. The machine became known as the “draisine,” and led to the creation of the modern bicycle.
● The term “bicycle” was not introduced until the 1860s, when it was created in France to describe a new kind of two-wheeler.

● About 100 million bicycles are made worldwide each year.
● Americans use their bicycles for less than one percent of all city trips. Europeans bike in cities a lot more often – in Italy 5 percent of all trips are on bicycle, 30 percent in the Netherlands, and seven out of eight Dutch people over age 15 have a bike.
● The Tour de France is one of the most famous bicycle races in the world. Established in 1903, it is considered to be the biggest test of endurance (耐力) out of all sports. Lance Armstrong, an American cyclist, is the only rider to have won seven titles (1999--2005) after surviving cancer.
● Bicycle Moto Cross (BMX), an extreme style of bicycle track racing, became a sport in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Most parents are not willing to let their children stay home by themselves. When Paul’s parents finally decided to let him stay alone, it was an experience that he’d never forget.
The old house was divided into two small houses by a thin wall. On the north were the Leonards, and on the south were the Hargers.
The Leonards – the husband, the wife, and the 8-year-old son had just moved in. And aware of the wall, they argued in a friendly way as to whether or not the boy, Paul, was old enough to be left alone for the evening while they went to a “certain” movie. The reason for their not wanting Paul to see certain movies, certain magazines, certain books and certain television shows was a mystery he respected.
“I’ll be all right,” said Paul. He was very tall for his age and thin. “What could happen to me here? I’ll be fine.”
Soon after Paul’s parents left, the radio in the Hargers’ house went on. It was soft at first – so soft that Paul couldn’t make out the announcer’s words. Gradually, the music was so weak and unharmonious (不协调的) that it could not be recognized.
Bravely, Paul tried to listen to the music rather than to the man and woman who were fighting.
The voices of the man and woman were getting louder, drowning out the radio. The woman was shouting now! The man was shouting something awful. All at once it was all quiet next door – except for the radio.
Now the fighting was beginning again – louder and louder, crazy and cruel. The woman shouted again. Paul stood, shaking, wanting to shout in fear.
Paul heard the clicking of the woman’s heels (鞋后跟) across the floor. The radio volume increased until the sound made Paul feel like he was trapped in a drum.
“And now,” the radio announcer shouted loudly, “remember if you have a dedication (the words that are used at the beginning of a book, piece of music, performance, etc. to offer it to sb. as a sign of thanks or respect), call Milton 9-3000 and ask for All-Night Sam”.
A door slammed next door and someone hammered (敲打) on the door. A pain spread over Paul’s skin. He faced the truth: The man and woman would kill each other if he did not stop them.
He beat his fists on the wall. “Mr. Harger! Mrs. Harger! Stop it!” He cried.
Next door, dishes were broken. Paul stood by the wall, helpless.
“Remember the number!” said All-Night Sam. “Milton 9-3000!”
In a state of confusion, Paul went to the phone and dialed the number.
“I wonder if I might make a dedication,” said Paul. “From Mr. Harger to Mrs. Harger, the message is I love you, and let’s make up and start over again.”
Paul dropped the phone back. The music stopped and Paul felt a big surprise when he heard Sam saying “I’ve been asked to bring a man and his wife back together again. I guess there’s no sense in kidding ourselves about marriage! It isn’t any bowl of cherries! There are ups and downs”
No sound other than the music from the radio was ever heard from next door after this.
68. According to the passage, we can know _____.
A. the Leonards have lived here for a long time
B. Paul understood what a “certain” movie was
C. Paul has got used to the fighting between the Hargers
D. it was the first time that Paul had been left alone

A. Confident→frightened→helpless→surprised.
B. Frightened→helpless→confident→surprised.
C. Confident→surprised→frightened→helpless.
D. Surprised→helpless→frightened→confident.
70. It can be inferred that _____.
A. the Hargers stopped fighting and made up finally
B. the marriage between the Hargers finally broke up
C. the Leonards decided to move away at the end
D. it was when the Leonards came back that the fighting stopped
第Ⅱ卷 非选择题(两部分,共35分)
第五部分:任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。(每空1词)
The mind plays an important role in achieving every kind of goal, minor everyday goals or major goals.
With minor day-to-day goals, one usually knows what he wants to do or get, but when it comes to major goals, most people don’t know what they really desire. They desire to do something big, but they don’t know what to do. To succeed in doing anything and to use your mind power, you have to know exactly what you want to do. In order to focus your mind power on a goal, you need to have a clear and well-defined goal. How do you go about that?
You have first to think or meditate to find out what you want to gain or accomplish. For this you need focused and clear thinking.
After discovering what you really want to accomplish, you need to come up with a plan for action. You need to know that you have to do first and how to continue. All of these require planning, which means using the power of the mind.
After deciding on a goal and coming up with a plan, you need to hold in your mind a clear mental image of your goal. You need to see it accomplished. This step requires that you use your imagination, which is another power of the mind.
Affirmation (肯定) is a useful mental tool for you to use. What you affirm becomes part of the subconscious (潜意识的) mind, and consequently affects your behavior and actions. If your affirmations are positive or affirmative, they lead you to success.
Another important power of the mind is thought transference (转移). You need to be able to send your thoughts to other people. Often, you have to persuade others to agree with your ideas or help you in other ways. It is not enough just to talk with them. You need to believe in what you are saying, you need to be able to make other people believe something is true, otherwise they won’t listen and won’t care and you need to be able to reject your and their doubts. To be able to do so, you need concentration, control over your thoughts, the ability to control your mind, self-discipline and patience.
Not every thought becomes a reality and a thought has to be repeated often in order to make it come true. Doubts, fears and worries tend to destroy what you build with the power of your mind, which means that you need to clear your mind of negative thoughts and doubts.
